A Virtual Private Network (VPN) helps keep internet users private information safe and secure.  This is done by putting a “virtual wall” around your hardware’s and software’s connection, making it a point-to-point access with a website or an online service such as what Xbox uses for its games and other content. They can also increase security, bypass regional content restrictions, and in some cases, even improve network performance.

However, the Xbox gaming devices do not have native support for a VPN, and the setup initial setup can be a pain in the ass.  But this article will try and get you up and running with one so you and your family can rest assured your information is safe and secure.

In order to use a VPN with Xbox, you need a Windows computer that’s set-up for a VPN.  You’ll need to setup the Xbox to use the Windows VPN access.  For this initial step, link your Windows PC to your Xbox via an Ethernet cable.

  1. Turn your Xbox and Windows PC OFF.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable between your Xbox and VPN-ready PC.
  3. Login to Windows as normal.
  4. Turn your Xbox console ON.
  5. Back on the Windows PC, right-click the Start button.
  6. Click Settings.
  7. Click Network & Internet.
  8. Click VPN.
  9. Click Change adapter options.
  10. Right-click on your VPN icon. In our example we’re using Private Internet Access VPN.
  11. Click Properties.
  12. Click the Sharing tab.
  13. Check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection box.
  14. Click the Select a private network connection box.
  15. Choose your Xbox’s ethernet connection.
  16. Press OK.
  17. Press the Xbox button on your Xbox controller.
  18. Press the RB button three times.
  19. Select Settings.
  20. Select the Network tab.
  21. Select Network settings.
  22. Select the Test network connection tile. Your console should connect to the internet.
  23. Yes, you should have your Windows PC on when you’re playing Xbox to use the VPN access.

But first, you’ll need a VPN service to connect to.  May we recommend a company called ExpressVPN.  I have used it with my Macs and Windows computers, and its easy to setup.

In closing, a VPN is the best option to secure you and your family’s private information and gaming.
