The FBI has issued an official warning on using public charging stations for your phone. The warning states that hackers can gain access to your information while the device is plugged into one. This is also known as “Juice Jacking“.
The hackers gain access to the phone when a USB wire in plugged into the charging station, where a hacker could install Malware onto the device and gain access to key information such as your Contacts and other necessary files to make the phone work.
This warning is mostly for Android-type phones. iOS devices have security features built into the operating system to help twat attacks such as this, although all users of phones should be aware of this possibility.
The warning states:
“Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers,” a tweet from the official FBI account read. “Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead.”
The FCC had previously issued a similar warning about the above back in 2021.
