If you need to archive (ZIP) a file or folder on your iPhone or iPad, iOS gives you the ability to do so when using the Files app.

What IS a compressed (archive) file?

When archiving a folder or a file, it ‘Compresses‘ file(s) into one simple, easy to manage archive and also minimizes the storage space that a file may use.  The file can then be stored on the device, on an external device, or even be sent as an attachment via e-mail where a receiver can then be uncompressed and read like any other file.

Here’s how:

  • Go into the Files App (blue folder icon).
  • Find the file or folder you wish to archive.
  • Tap and hold the icon until a drop down menu appears.
  • Choose the Compress option.
  • After a few moments, the compressed file will appear (the icon will say ZIP on it).
  • Repeat these steps for each file or folder you wish to archive.
  • That’s it.
