On the popular Chinese e-commerce platform JD.com, the standard iPhone 17 with 256GB of storage secured the highest number of pre-orders among the new iPhone models. This information was reported by the South China Morning Post, following the commencement of pre-orders on Friday.
There is a notable exception: Apple postponed the pre-orders for the all-new, ultra-thin iPhone Air in China due to regulatory challenges related to eSIM approval in the country. Nevertheless, on Apple’s online store in the United States, most iPhone Air configurations remain available for delivery on September 19, the launch day. Consequently, it is plausible that the entry-level iPhone 17 would have achieved popularity in China even if the iPhone Air had also been available for pre-order.
The reason behind the regular iPhone 17’s popularity, despite being considered a “boring” choice, can be attributed to its perceived value. The device maintains the same starting price of $799/5,999 yuan as the regular iPhone 16 when it was launched. This price point includes a larger 6.3-inch display with thinner bezels, ProMotion support for a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, doubled base storage of 256GB, and numerous other enhancements. Notably, the display improvements bring the base iPhone closer to the Pro models in terms of performance.
While the iPhone 17 lacks a flashy new design and is not the thinnest iPhone ever, it has emerged as an unassuming success so far.
