At the “Software Update Complete” stage, where you typically tap on “Continue” to reach the Home Screen, there might be a small piece of additional information. Some users are encountering a warning that future updates will be automatically downloaded and installed, with the option toggled on automatically if the “Continue” button is tapped. However, there’s a subtle “Only Download Automatically” option that doesn’t opt you into automatic updates if you’re paying attention, but it’s easy to overlook.
If you already have automatic software updates enabled, you won’t see iOS 26.2 activate them. Moreover, it doesn’t seem to be displaying for all users who have automatic update installation turned off. Therefore, it’s advisable to double-check your settings just in case. Even if iOS 26.2 doesn’t activate automatic software updates, it’s worth being aware of the possibility because it’s an option that Apple can incorporate into any update. If you’ve ever experienced an update mysteriously installing on your device without your manual intervention, it’s likely due to the inadvertent activation of automatic software updates.
If you did install iOS 26.2 and accidentally enabled automatic updates, you can revert the change by navigating to “General” > “Software Update” > “Automatic Updates” and toggling the option off. From there, you can choose to allow updates to automatically download while disabling the automatic installation of system files.
