Today Tivo released its quarterly look at the state of TV in the United States. part of that study included a look at how people stream their content in the United States. According to that report Roku is once again the most popular streaming player in the United States but Smart TVs still dominate.

Here is the full break down of the most popular ways to stream your favorite show:

  1. Smart TVs 27.6%
  2. Roku 21.26%
  3. Gaming Consoles 20.1%
  4. Amazon Fire TV 17.7%
  5. Chromecast 10.8%
  6. Apple TV 10.3%

What is maybe most interesting here was that Roku was the fastest growing with a 20.1% jump year over year. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick also grew by 11.7% but Chromecast and the Apple TV lost market share. The Apple TV dropped 22.9% year over year as more Americans seem to be looking for cheaper options.

One interesting note is that Tivo did not break out the OS for the Smart TVs so it is very possible that many of these smart TVs are run by Roku or Amazon. Also, it is interesting to see that Android TV did not make the list of the top 6 biggest streaming devices in the United States.

According to Tivo only 34.9% of Americans said they did not own a streaming device. This is very similar to the numbers from 2018 suggesting that the growth of streaming players has slowed as more most Americans who want one already have a streaming player.
