According to the New York Times, Disney charges providers about $15 per month per subscriber for all of their ESPN channels. With YouTube TV’s 10 million subscribers, that means Disney is earning approximately $150 million monthly for just their ESPN networks. As Awful Announcing notes, that’s $5 million a day before even accounting for Disney’s other channels.
Disney networks have been suspended from YouTube TV since the evening of October 30. That means Disney has lost at least $20 million in the past four days. That might be a drop in the bucket for Disney right now, but it will add up quickly. YouTube TV, meanwhile, risks losing subscribers who want to watch Disney programs.
Disney asked YouTube TV to restore ABC News just for Election Day coverage, but the provider refused. The pair are butting heads over a new carriage deal. The previous deal expired at the end of the day on October 30.
YouTube TV said they would give subscribers a $20 credit if Disney channels were unavailable for an extended period of time. Some subscribers report receiving a $10 credit so far.
