Basic Setup Steps
- Connect your router
- Plug the router into your modem using an Ethernet cable
- Connect the router to power and turn it on
- Wait 2-3 minutes for it to fully boot up
- Access the router’s settings
- Connect a computer to the router via Ethernet cable or use the default WiFi network (check the label on your router for the default network name and password)
- Open a web browser and type in the router’s IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 – check your router’s manual or label)
- Log in with the default admin credentials (often “admin/admin” or “admin/password” – also on the label)
- Configure your network
- Change the network name (SSID): Pick something you’ll recognize but doesn’t identify you personally
- Set a strong WiFi password: Use at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
- Choose security type: Select WPA3 if available, otherwise WPA2 (never use WEP or leave it open)
- Change the admin password: Don’t leave the default router login credentials
- Optional but recommended settings
- Enable automatic firmware updates if available
- Set up a guest network for visitors
- Consider hiding your SSID if you want extra privacy (though this won’t stop determined intruders)
- Enable the firewall if it’s not on by default
- Save and restart
- Save all your settings
- Restart the router if prompted
- Connect your devices using your new network name and password
Troubleshooting tips: If you can’t access the router settings, try resetting it by holding the reset button for 10-15 seconds. Make sure you’re connected to the right network and that your computer’s firewall isn’t blocking access.
What type of router do you have? Some brands like Google WiFi, Eero, or newer models have mobile apps that make setup even easier.
