TerminalIconIf you’ve used the new Disk Utility in El Capitan, you may have noticed that there is no longer an option to verify and/or repair disk permissions.  This is a necessary step in keeping your Mac running at its best.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) there is a way to do it from the Terminal.  If you don’t feel comfortable using the Terminal, then look for a future article on how to do this with 3rd party utilities coming soon.

The following has been verified by AppleScoop and has found to be in good working order.  Make sure you type the below commands EXACTLY as you see them, or unfavorable results may develop.

How to Verify Disk Permissions:

  1. Open the Terminal by going to Finder > Applications > Utilities.
  2. Type: sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages –verify –standard-pkgs /

How to Repair Disk Permissions:

  1. Open the Terminal by going to Finder > Applications > Utilities.
  2. Type: sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages –repair –standard-pkgs –volume /
  • Doing the above may take some time just like when you were in Disk Utility.  Do not close the Terminal window until you see another Terminal prompt.

After doing the above, I suggest rebooting your Mac to make sure it will “see” the newly repaired Permissions.
