Partitioning a hard disk allows an end-user to either have another area on a disk to have storage for data or even another operating system, such as the beta version of macOS Catalina.  Fortunately, MacOS makes it easy to do with an included utility called Disk Utility which is located in Finder > Applications > Utilities.

*** As always, backup any important data before doing the below ***

Opening the app will display the below:

Here’s the layout of the app:

  • On the left-side lists all your internal and external drives.
  • In the middle shows how much space you currently have available.

To Partition a hard disk, click on the Partition button.

Another window opens.  The general rule is to Partition a drive in half.  Example, if you have a 1 Terabyte hard drive, then you’d split the drive into 2 sections (around 50GB each).

Once this step is done, click OK, and the app will start the process.

That’s it.  If you have any problems with the below, please use our Discussion Forums.
