How to Navigate the iPhone X and Later

Because the iPhone X (or later) doesn’t have a home button, you will have to use gestures to navigate the phone to where you want to go.  The following is a chart of hand gestures.

Turn on the iPhone:

• Press and hold the RIGHT SIDE button.

To unlock:

• Swipe UP from the bottom, and then use Face ID or type in your Passcode.

To view open apps:

• Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen, and pause near the middle.

To force close an app:

• Swipe UP on the app’s window.

To go to the Home Screen from any app:

• Swipe UP from the bottom’s edge.

To switch between apps:

• Swipe along the bottom edge from left to right or visa versa.

To go to Control Center:

• Swipe DOWN from the top right of the screen (swipe UP to go to the Home Screen).

To see Notifications:

• Swipe DOWN from the top of the screen (Swipe UP to go to the Home Screen).

To Search:

• Swipe DOWN from the middle of the screen to activate Spotlight (Swipe UP to go to the Home Screen).

To use Siri:

• Say “Hay Siri” and make a request, such as “Hey Siri, find me the nearest pizza place.”
• Press and hold the [RIGHT] side button.

To take a screen shot:

• Press the [SIDE BUTTON] and the [VOLUME UP] buttons.  Your screen shot will be saved to the Photos app.

To use Apple Pay:

• Double click on the [RIGHT SIDE] button, and then use Face ID to approve payment.
• Hold the TOP of the iPhone near a payment reader.

To put iPhone to sleep:

• Press the [RIGHT SIDE] button.

To wake up the iPhone:

• Tap the screen or raise it to wake it up.

To call emergency services:

• Press and hold the [RIGHT SIDE] button and one of the volume buttons (keep holding to auto-connect).

To restart the iPhone:

• Press and quickly release the volume UP button.
• Press and quickly release the volume DOWN button.
• Press and hold the right side button until the Apple Logo comes up.

To turn iPhone OFF:

• Press and hold the [RIGHT SIDE] button, and a Volume button until the slider appears.
• Slide to turn it off.
